How to Choose a Pet Brush

  |     |   Pets

brushBrushing your pet in your Oceanside apartments is part of being a loving pet owner. Brushing serves several different purposes. It’s a way to spend quiet time with your pet, gives you a chance to carefully inspect your pet for any health issues, and helps to keep your pet more comfortable. It’s common for pets to shed fur when it gets warmer, and brushing helps to accelerate this process. It also helps to ensure that shed fur ends up in the wastebasket instead of on your furniture. When brushing your pet, make sure you use a brush that is designed for pet use. There are a few different kinds to choose from:

Bristle Brushes

These are perfect for dogs and cats with short hair. Regular brushing with a bristle brush will activate the oil glands and keep short-haired pets’ coats silky.

Undercoat Rakes

If your pet has very thick fur, an undercoat rake is essential. These are typically made out of plastic with extra thick bristles that help release knots and get rid of the undercoat during seasonal transitions.

Pin Brushes

Pin brushes are perfect for helping get clumps out of cat fur; in particular on long-haired cats.

Wire-Bristle Brushes

These are almost exclusively for cats. They work really well at getting rid of excess fur during shedding season.

Metal Combs

Metal combs come in a variety of densities. Very tightly packed metal combs are perfect for combing out pests like ticks and fleas. If you use these on your pet, be sure to do the grooming outside or someplace where you can easily and quickly get rid of what comes off your pet. Wide-toothed metal combs can be used on dogs whose fur has become matted.

Currycombs

Currycombs are mostly for very short-haired dogs, such as beagles. These have rubber tips, which are very gentle on sensitive pets. They can also be used on cats, but know that some cats enjoy this type of rubber-tipped grooming aid while others prefer metal combs.

If your pet “bristles” at grooming time, be patient and work slowly. The more your pet gets used to it, the less they will react against it. If you’d like to see apartments that are available for you and your pet, please contact us today!
