Surprise your favorite hockey fan with one of two fun presents that you can create yourself. Both are inexpensive and very simple to make. Plus, these gifts will be extra special since they were handcrafted especially for them by you.

No-Sew Fleece Blanket

You will need:

  • 2 pieces fleece fabric (about 2.25 yards each) with a hockey-related design

Directions:

  1. Lay the piece of fleece that will be the back of the blanket face-down.
  2. Next, lay the other piece on top of the first piece of fleece face-up.
  3. Trim both pieces at the same time, so they are the same size. Be aware that the finished blanket will be about 10 inches smaller when complete.
  4. Cut out one 6-inch square from each corner of both pieces of fleece.
  5. Create fringe by cutting 6 inches into the fleece at 1-inch intervals around all sides of the blanket.
  6. Knot the fringe pieces from the bottom and the top pieces together tightly around the entire blanket until all are tied.

No-Sew T-Shirt Pillow

You will need:

  • Xl Hockey T-Shirt (Clean)
  • 12 x 12 pillow form or fiberfill

Directions:

  1. Start by cutting off the arms of the T-shirt.
  2. Get rid of the top of the shirt where the neckline is by cutting straight across.
  3. Cut the T-shirt into two 12 1/2-inch x 12 1/2-inch squares. Try to place the hockey graphics at the center of the pillow, but if it’s not possible, don’t worry.
  4. Lay the right sides of the shirt together (so that the shirt is now essentially inside-out).
  5. Sew three sides of the pillow together, leaving the top open.
  6. Turn right-side out. Poke out the corners.
  7. Insert pillow form (you could also just stuff the pillow with fiberfill if you don’t have a pillow form).
  8. Hand-stitch the opening closed.

fanSummers in Oceanside California can get hot. Really hot. Sure, we think it’s worth it given all the other benefits of living here, but the heat is real. Here are four tips on how to beat the summer heat and stay cool, whether you’re indoors or outside.

Indoors: Reinforce Seals Around Doors and Windows

If your AC is having a hard time keeping up, give it a boost. Check the seals around any exterior doors and windows. If the seals aren’t efficient, you’ll absorb too much heat from outside. Seal reinforcing products are available at any hardware store.

Do be sure to check with your building manager to make sure that your desired sealing product is in compliance with apartment regulations before applying.

Outdoors: Stick to the Shade

No matter how hot it is out, shady areas are much cooler. OK, technically they only feel cooler: 100 degrees is 100 degrees whether you’re in the shade or not, according to recent news reports.

Still, the additional solar radiation you absorb when standing in the sun makes you feel hotter. It can make you sweat more, leading to quicker dehydration.

Your best bet then when outdoors is to stick to the shade. It may not technically be cooler, but you yourself will stay cooler since you’re avoiding solar radiation.

Indoors: Invest in Blackout Blinds

Sealing cracks and gaps around windows is a good first step, but you still have to contend with the bright sunlight. Install blackout blinds on all windows that receive direct sunlight. In the hottest parts of the day, keep these blackout blinds closed whenever possible. Certainly, when you’re not at home to enjoy that sunlight, you don’t need to pay for the extra AC needed to offset that sunlight.

Outdoors: Stay Cool With the Right Products

Sometimes you can’t stick to the shade, but the right products can go a long ways toward keeping you cool. People swear by these Chilly Pad cooling towels by Frogg Toggs, which keep you cool through evaporation. A good misting fan can also help.

strawberries Enjoying freshly harvested strawberries is a quintessential rite of late spring and early summer that never seems to lose its magic. If you're like most residents of apartments in Oceanside, CA, you're glad you live in an area where your local supermarkets are able to offer these seasonal jewels fresh from the field. Now that the first strawberries are just about to make their annual appearance, you may be looking for new ways to celebrate their deliciousness — and what better way to do that than hosting an elegant dessert party with fresh strawberries as the star of the show? Here's how to pull it off.

Select a Specific Dessert

The first step in throwing a dessert party is selecting the dessert. Classic strawberry shortcake is always a winner, but if you want to turn it up a notch, consider something like strawberry mousse whipped up with sweet cream, raw honey, and lemon. Strawberry pie is another possible player. Keep in mind that there's no rule that states you have to choose only one dessert, especially if you plan on inviting more than six guests.

No matter what type of dessert you decide on, including several bowls of ripe, freshly picked strawberries will be a welcome touch.

Send the Invitations

Elegant parties deserve to be announced via elegant invitations. They don't have to be ornate affairs printed on vellum paper with elaborate calligraphy, but they should be more than mass emails or social media messages. Simple, handwritten notes on good quality paper should suffice. If you're going to be including residents of your apartment community on the guest list, hand-delivering the invitations provides a nice touch.

Set the Stage

Set the appropriate stage for a strawberry celebration with lots of fresh flowers and brightly colored dessert plates. If possible, hold the party on your patio or balcony — something about strawberries just tastes better when they're enjoyed al fresco. For a final layer of elegant polish, pair your dessert or desserts with a slightly sweet sparkling rosé wine.

Our apartments feature gourmet kitchens complete with sleek, stainless steel appliances, custom cabinetry, and granite countertops. Call us today to learn more about enjoying life in our community.
