Moving into Oceanside apartments and selecting furniture for your space is an exciting process. When you decide to purchase a fabric couch or an upholstered chair, you face a potential challenge with cleanliness. Spills on the furniture may leave unsightly stains, but that does not mean you cannot remove the stain with the right process.
Vacuum the Upholstery
Set-in stains from a spill, an injury or any other problem do not mean you cannot remove the problem. Use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment. Vacuum the entire couch or chair. Pay particular attention to the stained area to remove any debris or loose items from the stained area. Since a set-in stain may have dried-on liquids, you may need a vacuum to pull up part of the stuck-on material.
Make a Cleaning Agent With Vinegar, Water, and Dish Soap
Mix 2 cups of distilled water with 1 tablespoon of dish soap and 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Make sure that the soap is mixed well so that any grease or related items in the stain pull up. Test the mixture against the fabric before you start cleaning the stain. While dish soap and vinegar are safe on most materials, double-check by first using it on a discreet area. You can also look at the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions to determine if there are cleaning agents recommended for the upholstery.
Blot the Stain
Dip a clean, white microfiber cloth into the mixture. Do not use any clothes that may bleed onto your upholstery. Blot the stained area with the mixture. Do not rub, since that may damage your upholstery. Always blot the area to avoid damaging the fibers of the fabric.
Use a fresh, dry microfiber cloth and dip it in plain distilled water. Blot the area with the fresh water to pull up the excess soap and vinegar. Repeat the process with the soap-and-vinegar mixture, followed by fresh water, until you pull up the stain. Turn on a fan and point it at the wet area on your couch or chair. When the area dries, check it for a stain. You may need to clean a set-in stain a few times before you pull up the entire stain.
