Summertime is outdoor time, a great time to walk, bicycle, play tennis, run or work outdoors. As long, that is, as you don’t overdo it. A bit too much exercise under the hard-beating sun and too little shade and rehydration, and you might find that one of your companions doesn’t look so good. They’re dizzy, a bit faint, and complaining of nausea and/or headache. What should you do? Is it adequate to sit them down in the shade and give them a cool drink, or do you need to call for help?
Is It Heat Exhaustion or Heatstroke?
Heat exhaustion can often be dealt with by laypersons on the scene, but heatstroke is a medical emergency and requires an immediate call to 911. According to the Center for Disease Control, here are some of the differences, as well as the treatment:
-
Disorientation: A person with heat exhaustion may be dizzy, but confusion is a sign of heatstroke.
-
Skin: In heat exhaustion, the skin is cold, pale and clammy. In heatstroke, it’s hot and red and may be dry or damp.
-
Pulse: Heat exhaustion, fast and weak. Heatstroke, fast and strong.
-
Temperature: If it’s higher than 103, it’s heatstroke.
-
Nausea, headache and passing out can happen in both heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
For Heatstroke:
-
Call 911.
-
Get the victim somewhere cooler.
-
Lower the body temperature. Use cool damp cloths or a bath if it's available.
-
Do not allow the person to drink.
For Heat Exhaustion:
-
Get them to a cool place.
-
Loosen their clothes.
-
As with heat exhaustion, use cool damp cloths or a bath to lower temperature.
-
Give sips of water.
-
If there is vomiting, the symptoms get worse or they last more than an hour, get medical help right away.

Residents who love living in Oceanside apartments know what makes Oceanside, California, a great place to live. It’s everything people love about coastal living, yet it’s so close to the city of San Diego. Of course, residents also know how hot it can get in San Diego in the summertime. To offset some of that outdoor heat, here are a few cold desserts you can prepare and serve to guests. Stay cool with these cold summer desserts.
Paletas
Paletas are Mexico’s version of a standard summer classic: the Popsicle. These sweet treats are infused with fruit, and milk or coconut milk is often added for creamy flavor. Some even include spices or chilies.
These are available at just about any Hispanic grocery, but you can also make them yourself. Use a Popsicle mold, or, if you don’t have one, shot glasses will do.
You can’t go wrong with these strawberry coconut paletas, the perfect balance of sweet and creamy. And if you’re up for something a bit more complex, check out these chili paletas, which combine spicy flavors like jalapeño with cool cantaloupe, cucumber, and lime. Delicious!
Strawberry Pretzel Pie
A favorite at potlucks across the Midwest, San Diegans will appreciate this cool summer classic just as well. Strawberry pretzel pie starts with a crust of broken-up pretzels, butter and sugar. After that’s baked and cooled, add the cream layer, which is traditionally made from Cool Whip, cream cheese and sugar. Dress up the dish by subbing in real whipped cream. Spread that mixture evenly over the top of the crust.
The top layer is just strawberries in strawberry Jell-O. Nothing too fancy there! But the combination of the salty, crunchy pretzels, the smooth creamy filling, and the bright, sweet Jell-O is something special.
For an adults-only gathering, spice things up with boozy Jell-O.
Agua Fresca
Our last cool summer treat is agua fresca. Just drop water, a favorite fruit, a bit of sweetener and possibly some mint into your blender. Serve over ice.

Summers in Oceanside California can get hot. Really hot. Sure, we think it’s worth it given all the other benefits of living here, but the heat is real. Here are four tips on how to beat the summer heat and stay cool, whether you’re indoors or outside.
Indoors: Reinforce Seals Around Doors and Windows
If your AC is having a hard time keeping up, give it a boost. Check the seals around any exterior doors and windows. If the seals aren’t efficient, you’ll absorb too much heat from outside. Seal reinforcing products are available at any hardware store.
Do be sure to check with your building manager to make sure that your desired sealing product is in compliance with apartment regulations before applying.
Outdoors: Stick to the Shade
No matter how hot it is out, shady areas are much cooler. OK, technically they only feel cooler: 100 degrees is 100 degrees whether you’re in the shade or not, according to recent news reports.
Still, the additional solar radiation you absorb when standing in the sun makes you feel hotter. It can make you sweat more, leading to quicker dehydration.
Your best bet then when outdoors is to stick to the shade. It may not technically be cooler, but you yourself will stay cooler since you’re avoiding solar radiation.
Indoors: Invest in Blackout Blinds
Sealing cracks and gaps around windows is a good first step, but you still have to contend with the bright sunlight. Install blackout blinds on all windows that receive direct sunlight. In the hottest parts of the day, keep these blackout blinds closed whenever possible. Certainly, when you’re not at home to enjoy that sunlight, you don’t need to pay for the extra AC needed to offset that sunlight.
Outdoors: Stay Cool With the Right Products
Sometimes you can’t stick to the shade, but the right products can go a long ways toward keeping you cool. People swear by these Chilly Pad cooling towels by Frogg Toggs, which keep you cool through evaporation. A good misting fan can also help.
